The body length of these animals exceeds the shoulder height. Massive withers and shoulders add much to the body length. The head of a purebred dog is massive, but cleanly chiseled and free from coarseness. The eyes of these creatures should be almond-shaped and very dark; the ears should be carried erect, but not dropped or hanging. Strongly developed jaws with 42 sound teeth are very important in this breed. A scissors bite is the only acceptable; missing teeth and undershot bite are serious faults.

This breed is also known as Alsatian; this name was given to the breed during the WWII then the popularity of the breed decreased and the breed was on the verge of extinction. After the WWII, the original name was restored though this one is also used up to nowadays. Males of this breed are naturally bigger than females and range between 24 and 26 inches tall at the shoulders. The average weigh of males is 70-90 pounds. Females are about 22-24 inches and weigh 60-80 pounds. Some representatives of the breed can be as large as 140 pounds.
