After the WWII, the breed was splitted into two parts – the eastern and the western one. Unfortunately, taday the eastern type is rare with many lines unfortunately extinct. There are eastern bloodlines in the United States and in Europe to serve to increase the genetic diversity and vigor of the breed of the DDR type. The dogs retaining much of the original characteristics of the breed also offered a very good working ability. They are more robust and well-pigmented dogs that have been improved by the reduction in both the incidence and the severity of hip dysplasia.
