German Shepherds - Character and Description

German Shepherds are obedient and faithful. They are also good with children, although they are not really eager to make friends with strangers, and, if that comes to pass, this friendship is for the rest of the dog's life. A dog is very specific in picking a master, so once the choice is made, the dog is your most reliable and faithful friend for eternity. German Shepherds are active friends and they require everyday rigorous physical exercise.

German Shepherd dogs are medium sized. Dogs are around 24-26 inches at the withers; bitches are a bit smaller - 22-24 inches. Coat is dense, straight and accurate. It consists of the outer coat and the undercoat. Its complicated structure and high density requires that it receive regular and thorough grooming.

German Shepherds are black with light brown, tan or gray markings. There are also white dogs, but they are not referred to as true German Shepherds, although some fanciers take efforts to make a separate breed of white Shepherd dogs. But some specialists express doubts about the practicality of the breed; they believe it won't be as good of a guard dog because its white color makes it conspicuous.

German Shepherd Dogs have a smooth and effortless gait. Their hind and front legs can make long strides, which allow them to cover long distances without getting tired very much. They do not raise their feet high above the ground. Hind feet finish close to front feet, but they never cross. When trotting, German Shepherds are reminiscent of well lubricated machines.
